Friday tournament summary
Tournament main draw matches brought many interesting matches today:
Men’s Singles had two unexpected results. Estonian Raul Must, who lost in first round to Danish Rune Ulsing in three sets 21-19, 22-24, 21-13, and number two seed Petr Koukal from Czech Republic, who in spite of four matchpoints 20-16 lead in second game lost the set 21-23, and third game 12-21 to Carl Baxter. From players who passed to main draw through yesterday’s qualification only Kieran Merriless and Misha Zilberman won first round, the latter with more or less same ease as in his yesterday’s matches.
All seeded pairs in Men’s Doubles are through to quarterfinals. Dramatic ending had the match between Austrian pair Grassmuck/Zirnwald versus Welsh pair Morgann/Phillips. After fisrt two games 21-17, 17-21, both pairs scored 20 points. After that they progressed point by point, finishing at last at 30-28 for the Austrian pair.
Another interesting match was played in the first round of Women’s Singles. Seed number four Jill Pittard from England lost in three sets to Nathalie Descamps from Belgium 17-21, 21-8, 20-22. Especially third set with dramatic ending offered some long going rallies. However, in second round, Nathalie Descamps lost to Russian player Prokopenko 21-18, 7-21, 14-21, playing last two sets as if lacking stamina. Local player Kristina Ludikova received a lot of support from Czech spectators in the hall and got through to quarterfinals. In Mixed doubles Croatian pair Poznanovic/Durkinjak surprisingly beat French pair Choinet/Careme in three sets 13-21, 21-14, 21-18.
